A family autumn glamping adventure at Lady Margaret’s Park

By Scott Crowe

As parents to an energetic 18-month-old, Bailey, my partner Elizabeth and I are always looking for a holiday that helps break up our busy routine. We booked Lady Margaret's Park as the perfect retreat on our return journey from seeing family in Ireland. Since joining the Caravan and Motorhome Club team earlier this year, I was itching to go glamping with Experience Freedom, and this was our opportunity!

Located in Chirk, the site straddles the England-Wales border and is conveniently close to Wrexham and Chester too. Read on to find out what we did during our autumn glamping adventure at Lady Margaret’s Park.

Tuesday - our arrival

We arrived at 4pm and were greeted by site managers Amanda and Tony. Their friendly welcome set us up perfectly for our two-night stay in a Superior glamping cabin. After showing us the array of things to do in Chirk, we were able to access the site through the barrier, which allows for smooth entry and exit with state-of-the-art number plate recognition. There's also an option for fast check-in.

'Each glamping cabin has its own name'

We were excited to head to our accommodation as the autumn dusk set in, nestled its own dedicated Experience Freedom area. It was a lovely touch that each glamping model has its own name, and ours was warmly called Foxglove (Bysedd Y Cwn). It was easy to park and our space was clearly signposted. We noticed there was also an accessible parking space next to an accessible glamping cabin, perfect for anyone that needs step-free access.

We loaded our stuff into one of the glamping wheelbarrows, which really added a nice touch to the experience and were great for Bailey to have a ride in!

'Our Superior glamping cabin - no stone unturned'

First impressions really do count on holiday, and to say we were impressed with the Superior glamping cabin is probably the understatement of the year. It’s not just the stylish finish of these home-from-homes, but also the attention to detail, which leaves no stone unturned.

We were greeted with wooden decking backing onto a hill that rabbits have made home. This means you’re not overlooked by anyone else and can chill out, or in our case, chase after Bailey! Even with a little one, the fact that there’s a gate to access puts any parent’s mind to rest. The covered area of the decking was also a lovely touch - an outdoor space that’s sheltered from the elements, particularly handy if you’re heading here in the depths of winter.

'The highest standard'

The finer details are really one of the decisive factors when deciding how long you could glamp for. You know, the extras that you’re not quite sure about before you go away, whether or not you should bring your own bits and bobs. Although we were only staying for two nights, it was immediately clear that you could hunker down for at least a week with no issues at all.

Rest assured, with Experience Freedom, all details are covered. Every appliance in the kitchen area was of the highest standard, including the cooker and dishwasher. You could really rustle up a culinary masterpiece in that space, but considering we had a little one’s bed time to contend with, we decided to go and pick something up from Chirk.

Star Fish and Chips was on hand to satisfy our cravings and we also popped to Co-op for some essentials. Both are just a five-minute drive away from the site. The table inside our cabin had more than enough space for us to sit down and enjoy the food together. After that, it was time for an early night.

'The best shower'

There are two main bedroom areas in the Superior glamping cabin, one space for two up the ladder onto the mezzanine and the other behind the living area via small sliding doors. There's also a double sofa bed that pulls out in the living room. We brought a travel cot for Bailey, and there was ample space to set this up close to our room.

At this point, it would be rude to not give a shoutout to the shower in this accommodation, which was one of the best I’ve used on my travels. We chose to bring our own towels, but there's a handy option to hire luxury ones before any Experience Freedom booking. The bathroom has dedicated space to put your toiletries in, too.

Wednesday - discovering Chirk

It’s safe to say that we were up bright up and early with Bailey, and bright it was. It was a crisp autumn morning, that when combined with the forested wilderness of Lady Margaret’s Park, was ripe for an adventure.

After making some breakfast, we headed for the famous Chirk viaduct. The walk here was pretty easy, with a handy exit from the site near the Experience Freedom area, which was fairly easy to navigate even with a pram. Wear wellies if it’s been a bit wet over previous days.

'A simply sensational view'

The view of the viaduct was simply sensational, and the fact that the field leading up to it is full of sheep was an added bonus for Bailey. You’ll also enjoy the relaxing sound of the River Ceiriog, which forms the border between England and Wales. As you move closer, the aqueduct reveals itself and Bailey definitely got a kick out of seeing a canal boat cross from above.

We then headed back for lunch, but not before Bailey enjoyed himself at the handy play park back at Lady Margaret’s. It’s a great feature for young ones to let off some steam (and parents to catch a breather).

Any parent of a little one will say that downtime is absolute bliss, and we got Bailey in the car to get him off to sleep, with a view to, you guessed it, head to the pub! A pint overlooking Chirk’s valley at The Bridge Inn went down particularly well.

In tune with the glamping spirit, we thought we’d use our disposable barbecue to cook dinner that evening and the separate brick BBQ station worked a treat. It was a great experience and anyone with older kids should definitely make use of this - it’s a great addition to any stay, whatever time of the year.

Thursday - checking out

We knew that a check out time of 10am would give us enough time to get ready and make the most of our final day at Lady Margaret’s Park. We made great use of the wheelbarrows again and packed up the car for the circa three-hour journey back down to London.

With everything organised and it being sunny, it was time to head across Chirk Aqueduct. A two-minute walk from the glamping accommodation, the stroll across it takes you quite literally into England. Having had a taster the day before, seeing the canal boats navigate this narrow waterway across the valley was the perfect way to top off the glamping holiday. We also walked through Chirk Tunnel, a 19th-century engineering masterpiece that definitely requires a torch to navigate.

After this, we handed our keys back into reception and spent a great deal of the journey home planning our next Experience Freedom family adventure.
