Our experts’ ultimate guide to glamping

By Phil Scholey and Mark Bird, Experience Freedom site manager trainers

Glamping is all about finding the perfect sweet spot between rugged adventure and home comforts. To help you master the experience, we sat down with Phil and Mark - the experts responsible for training our site teams across the UK. Drawing on their years of expertise, here’s the ultimate guide to glamping throughout the year.

Spring and summer: the warmer months

1. ‘Always research the weather forecast and pack suitable clothing’

Although the days can be fine and bright, there’s often a chill as the nights draw in, so layers are essential, especially if you want to take advantage of the fantastic outdoor decking much of our Experience Freedom accommodation boasts.

2. ‘Don’t forget sunscreen or insect repellant’

To add your comfort outside, be sure to pack these essentials. In the evening, bring some citronella candles to sit outside and watch the stars.

3. ‘Sandals and trainers are ok, but walking boots are a must’

Many of our Experience Freedom glampsites are in beautiful, rugged areas where nature takes precedent. Some footpaths may be mucky, so make the most of a stroll in the surroundings with the best footwear.

4. ‘Plan your meals based on your type of break’

Stock up at the supermarket and enjoy the fantastic cooking facilities in our Experience Freedom accommodation. Bring some indulgent treats for a lazy weekend or filling meals for an energetic activity holiday.

5. ‘Little ones learn from the great outdoors’

Download nature quizzes and games for the little ones to use when outside. Butterfly and wildflower searching is a great way for them to learn.

Autumn and winter: maximise your cosiness

1. ‘Warm and waterproof unlocks everything outdoors’

Warming layers and waterproofs on top will ensure you’re not confined indoors, whatever the elements throw at you. There’s nothing like a brisk walk in the colder months, the surroundings have an extra element of beauty.

2. ‘Blankets will keep you extra toasty inside’

Much of our Experience Freedom is more than winterproof. Glamping cabins and pods are perfectly insulated for the colder months, but it’s always worth packing an extra blanket for that added cosiness. Read how Scott from the content team and family got on in a glamping pod in January.

3. ‘Hearty food for the win’

If you’re planning on eating in, warming soups and casseroles made with local ingredients just make a glamping stay at this time of the year all the more magical.

4. ‘Board games and quizzes in the evening’

When the nights draw in, a little bit of old school entertainment is the stuff of holiday memories with the loved ones.

General glamping hints and tips

1. ‘Ditch the screens and discover the local area’

Enjoy nature in all its glory and experience all the best things to do in the local area. Take a look at our guides for the best attractions close to each Experience Freedom glampsite.

2. ‘Use soft bags for packing rather than suitcases’

Maximise the space in both your vehicle and accommodation by using soft bags. These will squash away when not in use so they’re so much more suitable for a glamping holiday.

3. ‘Take advantage of all accommodation amenities’

Experience Freedom’s range of accommodation makes an extended stay as comfortable as a whistle-stop one. Make yourself at home and try out everything from the cooking facilities to expertly-designed storage space.

4. ‘Speak to your fellow glampers’

If you do run into anyone staying on the site, have a chat and see what they’ve done on their trip. So often, this is the way to absolute golden nuggets of information.
