The Universal Glamping Pod at Cayton Village suits all needs

Double Paralympic gold medal winner and nine-time World Champion paracanoeist Emma Wiggs MBE, checks out one of Experience Freedom's Universally Accessible Glamping Pods and delivers her verdict, during her stay at Cayton Village, North Yorkshire.

After a hectic few months leading up to the Paralympic Games it was certainly time for bit of RnR! We wanted a short ‘staycation’ somewhere near our beautiful coastline and we have always loved camping. So where better than to head to the beautiful Cayton Village Holiday Park near Scarborough, one of Caravan and Motorhome Club's newly refurbished sites!

We were greeted by lovely staff and offered a Universally Accessible Glamping Pod, an exciting new addition to the site and a breath of fresh air to me, a wheelchair user for over 20 years. Gone were the endless grab rails and rather clinical appearance we so often experience when we stay away and instead an accessible, well thought out pod, truly ‘universal’…to suit everyone!

It felt high end while keeping all the charms of living the outdoor life, it was easy to use for both myself and my wife, who is not disabled. Bramble the dog also seemed delighted with the under floor heating and the gated and secure veranda type seating area out the front, no need for her to be tethered to anything while we enjoyed sitting outside.

The bathroom was thoughtfully adapted and the kitchen was easy to use for both of us.  The site has been recently refurbished and was exceptional to wheel around, and we had our own parking space near the pod.

The real magic was the location of this beautiful site, we were 8 mins from Filey Beach which is not only stunning and dog friendly but the hard sand made it possible to wheel, or indeed cycle, push a buggy or just stroll easily along.

This is overwhelming for me, the first time in 20 years where I have been able to wheel and walk the dog along a beach. We also visited Scarborough Castle and enjoyed an October BBQ.

All in all our mini break was stunning, the site, the pod, the staff and the surroundings were all incredible, it really was a ‘wheelie’ amazing weekend!
