What to do with kids this February half term

London

If you’re glamping in half term week, staying near London means you’ll be close to lots of exciting activities. Explore the city’s streets and national landmarks with treasure trails and hunts: St Katherine’s Treasure Trail and the Huntfun series of trails are based around maps that will take you on journeys through Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and other famous areas as you’ve never seen them before.

Alternatively, you can see the capital from a slightly different perspective at Go Ape in Battersea Park. This high-ropes course lets kids of all ages and abilities swing from the tree tops and come home puffing and happy. If you’d prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, ZSL London Zoo has year-round activities and captivating exhibitions to lure animal-lovers. Young teens can become zoo keepers for a day, and once you watch a hippo chill out in a hot tub, you’ll have family memories forever.

Of course, no trip to London is complete without a visit to one of its museums, and the National Gallery is particularly kid-friendly, with drawing workshops, special tours and half term classes on offer. Perfect for a day when the weather is less kind!

Kent

Out in Kent, you’ll find plenty of places to go this February half term, with Canterbury and Folkestone being great choices. Follow the trail of international agents around Canterbury’s ancient streets with its Spy Mission maps, or duck into the Roman Museum for a taste of Roman Britain, including preserved mosaics and an “excavation room” for kids to discover their own treasures.

The charming Beaney House of Art and Knowledge is a great half term day out, with a daily schedule of workshops, a great café and amazing collections of artefacts to fire the imagination. Folkestone on the coast has great seaside activities, including the Ski Centre, where kids can learn to ski and snowboard on year-round dry slopes, and Sunny Sands beach, a beautiful stretch of sand perfect for windy walks and kite-flying.

Sussex

If you’re planning where to go on holiday, Brighton should also feature high on your list. It’s a very kid-friendly city and in February comes alive with activities. Sea Life brings children up close and personal with over 1,500 species of ocean wildlife, and has a daily schedule of feeding and talks on everything from jellyfish to sharks. Teens will love the Behind The Scenes tour, which takes them into the world behind the tanks where conservators and experts research the oceans. Or, prepare for nostalgia at the Toy and Model Museum, with its huge range of toys from decades past, including a full working train layout and priceless model trains.

Want a taste of the great outdoors? Brighton has plenty on offer, from the wildflower groves and football pitches of Hove Park to the Brighton Treasure Trail that winds through the city’s secret places. Make sure you stop by the famous Brighton Pier to jump on its hair-raising rides and even race BMX bikes.
